Halloween; the holiday of slut-shaming?
So I’m just scrolling through Tumblr, checking out various tags and I see so many slut-shaming posts written by women with relation to “Halloween sluts”.
I know that Halloween means costumes and frankly, we girls get the short end of the stick. Our costumes are blatantly short, revealing and very very inaccurate. We’re sexualised and objectified. I get that. I get that going to a costume shop and finding that the majority of outfits they stock are sexy and too revealing is disheartening and unfair.
But does that mean we get to pass judgement on girls who dress like this for Halloween?
Hell no.
It’s a personal choice. I’m sure that everyone’s worn, at some point or other, a tacky outfit that made your friends cringe but made you feel like a million bucks. So what if most of the girls at your Halloween party turn up dressed in sexy pirate or nurse outfits? Kudos to them.
I don’t get how you can use dress up costumes on one day of the year to judge how many sexual partners a woman has.
It’s really not about the costumes when you’re shaming women for “dressing like sluts” is it? It’s about how threatened and insecure you feel. It’s about putting pressure on women so they’re not more overtly sexual than you. It’s about valuing yourself as better because you’ve got the convulted sexist supposed moral high ground.
